Albuquerque, New Mexico, Aug. 1, 2012 — Cardinal Health donated more than 1,000 non-perishable items to Roadrunner^® Food Bank ─ the result of its annual FOODstruction competition, where competing employee teams create elaborate structures made entirely out of canned food items.

The theme of this year’s event was “Take a Bite out of Hunger,” and Cardinal Health employee teams were encouraged to build structures to best demonstrate the theme. Teams had the month of July to complete their entries.

“We look forward to this competition each year, because it’s such a fun approach to giving back to our community,” said Dara Ambriz, senior analyst, Finance Operations and Cardinal Health Giving 365 liaison.

 In selecting a winning team, Roadrunner^® Food Bank volunteers judging the event considered a number of criteria including:

• Creativity
• Adherence to the competition’s theme
• Use of a minimum of 100 cans of food
• Stability of structure
• Incorporation of food labels into design

“We’re really appreciative of the Cardinal Health FOODstruction competition each summer,” said Melody Wattenbarger, president and CEO of Roadrunner^® Food Bank, “especially because it helps us offset the decline in donations we see each summer following robust giving around the winter holidays.”

This year, five teams of Cardinal Health employees competed, building structures ranging from a picnic spread to Pac-Man^®, the 1980s arcade game character. The winning team, whose “Gone Fishing” structure depicted a fisherman’s pole snagging a shark, received a pizza party and a “casual week,” during which team members can wear jeans to work.
