Passionate Researcher Honored for Mentorship, Advocacy of Medical Laboratory Profession

Cardinal Health Awards Dr. Rodney E. Rohde urEssential Award

DUBLIN, Ohio, May 11, 2015 — Cardinal Health named Rodney E. Rohde, PhD, MS, SV,SM (ASCP)CM, MBCM the 2015 winner of the Cardinal Health urEssential Award, which recognizes the essential contributions medical laboratory professionals make to patient care. The company will donate $20,000 to the Texas State University Development Foundation to be used as scholarship funding for students seeking careers in medical laboratory science.  

“The urEssential Award was created to honor exceptional medical laboratory professionals that truly demonstrate how passion and dedication in the field can advance health care,” said Chris Kerski, senior vice president and general manager of Laboratory Products at Cardinal Health. “With a passion for the profession, a heart-felt desire to help others and an admirable commitment to mentoring his students, Rohde fully embodies what the urEssential Award stands for, and we’re proud to honor him.”

Rohde is the Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) program chair, professor, and associate dean for research in the College of Health Professions at Texas State University. Rohde also uses his voice to help elevate the profession through organizations like the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science and the Texas Association for Clinical Laboratory Science, where he serves as president through 2017.

Leading by example, he inspires his students and colleagues to become involved. One colleague describes Rohde as a "true scholar, incorporating research into his everyday activities," saying his work has helped shape the lives and career paths of many students and others who have had the privilege of working with him.

This marks the second year for the Cardinal Health award program.
